Holy eggnog! We are in the thick of the Holidays, can you believe it? Each year I feel as though I am less prepared than the last, not quite ready for the mayhem of Holiday travel, buying thoughtful gifts for family, and ALL the baking (and eating) that comes with this time of year. Well, I can't truly complain about the baking part, given how much I love cooking for my nearest and dearest especially this time of year when Pumpkin Spice is accepted in any which way. Though let's be real, after 5 attempts at a Pumpkin Spice Cake even a passionate cook can have their moments of exhaustion in the kitchen.
Here are my tips and tricks that help me, and hopefully also help you get through this Holiday period with ease and grace.
1. Don't over commit
It can be all too easy to say yes to all the Friendsgivings, Christmas Parties and everything in-between, but wear yourself out and stress ensues. Being that it is my favorite time of year, I take any and every opportunity I can to relax and soak in the magic that comes with Thanksgiving and Christmas. The FOMO from staying home usually disappears into the couch midway through watching my favorite Christmas flick ;)
2. Keeping treats in the Healthy category.
Coming from a sweet tooth, I know how easy it is to indulge in too much pecan pie this time of year. Is it the cool air, the holiday melodies, or is it easier to indulge because we wear layers, no matter what, we still gotta live a little. I'll just make an effort to create a healthier alternative, one that won't spike my blood sugar and have my feeling bloated and crappy the next day.
Here are a few of my favorite Holiday recipes:
3. Take a mid day coffee break.
I love taking breaks during the day, taking a moment for myself to enjoy a freshly brewed espresso. I've been loving Peet's Coffee Espresso capsules lately (Creme Scura Intensity 9 is my go to), this dark and robust espresso peps me right up. Try pairing it with my last baking project (pictured here is my latest - Grain Free Pumpkin Spice Protein Pie) this keeps me fueled for the rest of the afternoon, able to take on whatever life throws at me.
Peet's Espresso capsules are compatible with Nespresso Original machines and are available for purchase on Amazon.com, Target and Peets.com
4. Do your Christmas (and food) shopping online.
I don't know about you but I despise shopping malls and supermarkets this time of year. It takes just as much time to find a park as it does to shop your entire list, and don't get me started in the 12 people deep registers #nothanks. I like to plan ahead and purchase most of my Christmas gifts during the sale periods, all from the comforts of my home. Most websites offer free shipping, so I'll save on parking fees, gas and mainly sanity just by staying in.
Same thing goes for groceries, there are many sites out there that offer a huge variety of fresh produce delivered to your door for a small fee (or free depending on your order size).
5. Stick to a regular exercise routine.
Exercise is my therapy. Whenever I'm feeling stressed, overwhelmed or anxious from my ever growing to do list, I'll block 1-2 hours out of my day to do a HIIT class, Yoga or just go for a good ol fashioned run. I always come back with a clear mind, more energy and even with some new ideas (anyone else have their best ideas when they're running?)
